This article explains how to use and edit field Labels in the Basic Form Builder.

Admins and Designers can use field Labels to standardize data collection, improve reporting accuracy, and ensure consistent form usage across teams and locations.

Field Labels

Field Labels are the names displayed next to fields in the GoCanvas app and Web Client that tell users what information to enter. Each Label can be edited to clearly reflect the data being collected.

Editing field Labels

To edit new or existing field Labels in the Basic Form Builder:

  1. Create a new form using your preferred Basic Form Builder option.

    Build from Scratch.gif
  2. Add or select a field using the applicable method:
    • If a field already exists on the PDF: Select the field on your PDF.
    • If adding a new field: On the left side, in the Add panel, drag a field onto your PDF.
  3. Method one: On the right side, in the Field panel, click inside the Label textbox, highlight the existing text, type your new field Label, and click outside the textbox to confirm your changes.

Method two: On the left side, in the Form Outline panel, select a field, double-click the Label text, type your new field Label in the textbox, and press Enter.

    Note

When you use Auto-Build, field Label textboxes are typically named based on the input sections detected in your PDF (e.g. "Home Address").

When you use Build from Scratch, fields added to the workspace use the field type's default name (e.g. "New Calculation").

  4. In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.

Note

Keep your field Labels short and clear to make forms easier to scan, faster to complete, and less prone to errors. Aim for one or to three words so Labels remain direct and actionable (e.g. "Shipping Address").

Tips for using field Labels

Use the Position and Dimension settings in the Design section of the Field panel to adjust the field's size and placement. Alternatively, in the workspace, drag the field to the desired location and resize it using the square control points.
