This article explains how to add, format, and configure a Calculation field in the Basic Form Builder to automatically perform math using field values and constants.
Admins and Designers use Calculation fields to automate math on form data, reduce manual errors, and keep important totals up to date.
Calculation fields
A Calculation field in the Basic Form Builder automatically performs calculations on other field values, reducing manual work and keeping totals up to date.
Add a Calculation field
To map Reference Data for a parent field in the Basic Form Builder:

Create a new form using your preferred Basic Form Builder option.

Add or select a Calculation field using the applicable method:
- If a field already exists: Select the field on your PDF. On the right side, in the Field panel, expand the Type dropdown menu and select Calculation.
- If adding a new field: On the left side, in the Add panel, drag a Calculation field onto your PDF.
Note
A Calculation field starts with two dropdown by default and one section where you choose the mathematical operation.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save.
Configure Calculation field settings
Format controls how a Calculation field value appears, such as a number, time, or Currency.
To change the Format of a Calculation field in the Basic Form Builder:
- On your PDF, select an existing Calculation field.
- In the Field panel, expand the Format dropdown menu and select from the list:
- Numeric (whole or decimal): 1, 1.0, 1.00, 1.000, 1.0000, 1.00000, or 1.000000
- Time: HH:MM, HH:MM:SS, or MM:SS
- Currency: Adds a currency symbol and uses two decimal places, which cannot be changed. Example: $10.50, $21.00, $3,487.99
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save.
Field values vs. constants
Use field values and constants to supply numbers to a Calculation field.
Select existing Number, Date, or Calculation fields from the dropdown menu when you build a calculation. Constants are fixed numbers you enter directly into the calculation, such as a tax rate, discount, or standard fee.
Please Note
Calculation fields do not follow PEMDAS, so build calculations in the order you want them performed.
Configure Calculation panel
To configure an existing Calculation field in the Basic Form Builder:
- On your PDF, select an existing Calculation field.
- On the right, scroll to the Calculation panel and click Add Calculation.
- In the first calculation dropdown menu, choose one of the following options:
- Select a Number, Date, or Calculation field.
- Enter a Constant value in the textbox, then select Add Constant.

Select a mathematical operation:
- Addition
- Multiplication
- Subtraction
- Division
- Addition
- Expand the second calculation dropdown menu below the mathematical operations and either select a numeric field value or type a constant into the textbox.
- Click Done.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.
Note
If you edit or delete a constant, it will no longer appear in the dropdown menu. Numeric field values still appear even if removed from the calculation.
Add Value
To add an additional Calculation field value or constant to an existing calculation:
- On your PDF, select an existing Calculation field.
- On the right, scroll to the Calculation panel and click Edit.
- Click Add Value, then select a mathematical operation (addition (+), multiplication (×), subtraction (−), or division (÷)).
- In the calculation dropdown, select a new numeric field or type a new constant in the textbox.
- Click Done.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.
Delete field values or constants
To delete Calculation field value or constant in the Basic Form Builder:
- On your PDF, select an existing Calculation field.
- On the right, scroll to the Calculation panel and click Edit.
- Expand the calculation dropdown menu you want to change, then press Backspace.
- Select the new field value or enter the new constant.
- Click Done.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.
Note
If you expand each part of the calculation, delete the values in all calculation dropdown menus, and click Done, the entire calculation is removed.
