Multiple Choice fields in Basic Forms

This article provides information about how to add and configure Multiple Choice fields in the Basic Form Builder.

Admins and Designers can use Multiple Choice fields to standardize responses across submissions and quickly capture multiple relevant details for faster reporting.

Multiple Choice fields

A Multiple Choice field in the GoCanvas app allows users to select one or more options from a predefined list. This speeds up data entry and makes responses easier to analyze.

Please Note

Reference Data cannot be used with this field type.

Add a Multiple Choice field

To add a new Multiple Choice field in the Basic Form Builder:

  1. Create a new form using your preferred Basic Form Builder option.

  2. Add or select a Multiple Choice field:
    • To update an existing field: Select the field in the workspace. In the Field panel on the right, expand Type and select Multiple Choice.
    • To add a new field: In the Add panel on the left, drag a Multiple Choice field onto your PDF.

  3. On the right of the workspace, scroll down to the Choices panel.
  4. In the Choices panel, select Start from scratch or Edit a common list:
    • Start from scratch lets you add your own custom options.
    • Edit a common list lets you use editable predefined options from the following lists:
      • US State Abbreviations 
      • US State Names 
      • Month 
      • Weekday 
      • Australian State Abbreviations 
      • Australian State Names 
      • Canadian Province Abbreviations 
      • Canadian Province Names 
      • Pass/Fail 
  5. At the top-right of the Builder, click Save.
  6. At the top-center of the Builder, click Test to try out the field in the browser-based mobile form preview.
  7. At the top-right of the Builder, click Publish and Assign to users.

Multiple Choice field Styles

Multiple Choice fields support two Styles that control how options appear:

  • Checkboxes: Displays options in a vertical list with square selection boxes.
  • Button: Displays options as labeled, clickable buttons.

Note

The Choices panel list will be added and saved when you change between Multiple Choice Checkboxes or Button Style.

Configure a Multiple Choice field

To configure an existing Multiple Choice field in the Basic Form Builder:

  1. Select an existing field in the workspace.
  2. On the right side of the workspace, in the Field panel, expand Style to select your preference (Checkboxes is the default).
  3. If you use Checkboxes, you can set a Default Value:
    • Expand Default Value and select a value to pre-fill a field with a value when the user opens the form. Default Options include:
      • Blank 
      • First Choice 
      • Any custom choice you added

  4. At the top-right of the Builder, click Save.
  5. At the top-center of the Builder, click Test to try out the field in the browser-based mobile form preview.
  6. At the top-right of the Builder, click Publish and Assign to users.

Multiple Choice field values on PDFs

On both the Standard and Quick Start PDFs, Multiple Choice responses appear as a list of select options.

When editing submission data in the web portal, the field displays as editable text. The list of predefined choices does not appear during editing.
