Text fields
Admins and Designers can use text fields to capture accurate data, provide clear guidance, and improve workflow efficiency.
In the Advanced Form Builder, text fields include Text for user-entered information and Static Text for text that appears on the form or PDF but cannot be edited on your device.
Add a Text field
Text fields have two different Styles:
- Single line Text field captures brief text or nominal numbers, such as names, codes, or phone numbers.
- Multi-line Text field captures longer written responses, such as comments or descriptions.
To add a new Text field in the Advanced Form Builder:
- On the right side of the Forms page, in line with the form you wish to edit, click Edit.
- Add a Text field using your preferred method and Label the field clearly.
- (Optional) On the left side, in the Field Settings panel, click Multi-line (Single line is the default).
- Configure any necessary Field Settings.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.
Configure Text fields
Field Settings control how values are prefilled, formatted, required, and displayed in your form. Select an existing Text field to open Field Settings in the left panel.
Field panel settings
- Default Value
A value that automatically appears when a user starts a new submission.
- Format
-
Controls how data in the Single line Text field is displayed and structured. Options include:
- None: No special formatting and users can enter any characters.
- Email: Treats the value as an email address and helps ensure only an email format is entered.
- Number: For nominal numbers, including those starting with zero or needing symbols (Examples include ZIP codes and phone numbers).
Note
A Single line Text field set as Email shows an error for invalid entries (entries without "@domain.extension").
- System Default
-
Fills a Single line Text field with account or user-specific information pulled from GoCanvas. Options include:
- Username
- Company Name
- First Name
- Last Name
- Full Name
GoCanvas Tip
Utilize System Defaults whenever applicable to save your users time typing their name on every submission.
- Required
Makes Text fields mandatory. Users must enter a value before moving to the next screen or submitting the form.
- Read Only
Displays a Text field value on the form but does not allow users to change it.
Static Text
The Static Text field displays read-only instructions or notes, guiding users without requiring input.
Add a Static Text field
To add a new Static Text field in the Advanced Form Builder:
- On the right side of the Forms page, in line with the form you wish to edit, click Edit.
- Add a Static Text field using your preferred method.
- On the left side, in the Field Settings panel, in the textbox labeled Static Text, enter the read-only instructions
- Configure any necessary Field Settings.
- In the upper-right corner of the Builder, click Save, then Test the field, and click Publish and Assign to users.
