Adding Fields to your Basic Form

This article is dedicated to different methods for adding fields to a Basic Form as well as tools specific to fields within the Basic Form Builder.

Fields are categorized into Types and/or Styles within the Add menu and they all serve specific purposes.

Adding Fields

Field Types allow you to capture information in the format that makes the most sense for the information being collected or completing an action during the submission process. For example, Date fields capture dates in several formats and Calculation fields automatically complete simple mathematical functions.

In order to start adding fields to your form, you first must upload your PDF to either Auto-Build or Build from Scratch:

  • Auto Build: Upload your existing PDF and let GoCanvas use AI to build most of your form for you—giving you a running start to a complete form.
  • Build from Scratch: Build your mobile form and digital PDF manually, with your existing PDF as a base.

Regardless of if you allow Auto-Build to add the majority of your fields, there will still be fields that need to be added to the form.

Drag into Place

The primary method of adding fields is to drag them into place.

  1. On the left side of the workspace, select the appropriate field type from the Add menu and drag it onto your PDF in the center workspace.
  2. Using the corner control points, resize the field to fit the space available on the PDF.

  5. Save your work as you build.
Copy an Existing Field

The secondary method for adding fields is to copy existing fields in the center workspace.

  1. To reveal the field's Tool Ribbon, in the center workspace, select the field you wish to copy.
  2. Click Copy.

  3. Drag the copied field to the right location.
  4. If needed, update the Label to match the new field.
  5. On the left side of the workspace, in the Mobile Outline, reorder any copied fields that are not in the correct order for completing a submission.
  6. Save your work as you build.
Visual Cues when Adding Fields

As your adding fields, you'll notice that Dropdown, Multiple Choice, and Single Choice are highlighted in orange as a visual reminder to add Choices

To configure choices, select the field in the center workspace to open the Field settings menu on the right side of the workspace. Scroll on the right side of the workspace until the Choices menu is visible. You can also add Reference Data to a Dropdown field in lieu of choices.
