We've definitely talked about this functionality, but I don't think we've heard how it would be used. I'd love to hear more - any chance you could add some details here so I can pass this along to the Product Team?
We would like to be able to use the OCR functionality to capture text into an inspection report. For example, if a product has a serial number that is NOT in the form of a barcode/QR code, we would like to capture the data as text and save it in an inspection report which can be extracted easily in a report later on.
There are third party apps such as Text Scanner (OCR) that have the functionality but we are looking for integration into GoCanvas for this.
This would be incredibly useful, we deal with numerical strings on bins we are leaving at peoples houses without barcodes. At present we need to type each of them out with mixed results, an OCR would speed this process up massively & improve accuracy.

Howdy Adrian and Viren,
Thank you for the detailed feedback and use case examples! I will be sure to share the feedback you have provided with our Development teams for their consideration.
I am also looking for this functionality. This is to improve the accuracy of our drivers inputting the wrong truck odometer reading. Instead of manually typing the odometer reading, we are looking for an OCR functionality wherein they will just have to take a picture of the odometer reading and it will automatically be converted to a number value.
Thanks,
Kites

Howdy Kites,
Thank you for sharing details on your specific use case! We don't have an estimated timeline for optical character recognition functionality, but I have shared your feedback directly with our Product Managers.
The ability to add OCR functionality to a mobile form would provide a solution for several use cases. Within our organization, we are looking for OCR solutions for a custom business card scanning application we have created in GoCanvas. We created this form in GoCanvas due to the native Quick Base integration.
Any update on if or when this will be added to the development roadmap would be great!
Some in-app OCR functionality would be nice. I could see many use cases.
Many of the fairly new mobile devices offer photo OCR capabilities. I know it doesn't help the overall request, but depending on the use case and if you have a device that supports it, a workaround might be to take the photo and then copy the desired text out of the image and paste it into the GoCanvas field(s) as needed... not elegant at all and too many steps... but possible.

Thank you for checking in on this Feature Request and taking the time to leave comments. Optical Character Recognition is a function our Product team has previously discussed, but with COVID-19 affecting all businesses, we are regularly re-evaluating and re-prioritizing as we learn more each day.
We do not have a timeline for this functionality, but we really appreciate the specific and detailed use cases that have been shared so far. Sara and I have been providing this feedback directly to the Product managers for their consideration, and they would love to hear specifics on how much time OCR functionality would save for your teams.
Thank you for responding to the above feedback. I would think there are several good uses for OCR built into GoCanvas. The ability to create custom document scanning applications for internal or client forms (not yet on GoCanvas). Our immediate need is a custom business card scanner that maps to fields in GoCanvas and then pushes to our CRM in Quick Base.
I cannot tell you how much we need a OCR for our operations. The amount of time it would speed up our processes would be tremendous. I hope this feature becomes available soon.
OCR would help streamline so many processes for our container management locations. Having the ability to scan and input barcodes/serials automatically is a huge benefit!
OCR functionality would boost our productivity immensely! Please help us by bringing this feature to GoCanvas as soon as you can. Thank you for your consideration.
Just would like to check on the development regarding this topic RE: OCR functionality for GoCanvas.
Would appreciate any update.
Thanks!

Howdy Kites,
Thank you for checking in on this Feature Request! We still do not have an estimated timeline for OCR functionality, but I am continuing to share any comments and upvote counts with our Product managers.
Once any updates are made available, I will be sure to reply here. That way, anyone who has commented on/followed this topic will receive a notification via email.
I've just seen your above comment, so know you're trying to get development of this pushed through.
we would very like OCR implemented too so that we would capture engraved serial numbers, a reading (would look similar to analogue reading you would see on a odometer) and then date/time stamp that information at the same time
you would be the biggest hero if you could get this implemented
Thank you for continuing to revisit and discuss this feature request. I do not have an update since Chip's last comment but I have updated the appropriate teams with the continued enthusiasm and upvote counts.
OCR and text recognition for photos would be an amazing functionality! GoCanvas has already saved our team a lot of time in the field and in the office, but this would further increase our efficiency and the amount of work in the office to transfer information of nameplates with serial numbers, model numbers, into Excel. This would be a great addition, and I cannot up vote this function enough. Thanks!
We appreciate your continued interest in this feature. I currently do not have any updates on this request, but I've passed over the continued interest to our team once again. Our team will update here if there are any changes.
I have an update for you all! It looks like while using an ios device and a free text field you should have the ability to scan words and have them text into your field.
From your free text field if you hold down your finger you'll see the option to "paste" or there will be another option that looks like a box with three lines in it. If you select this box it'll open up your camera and you can scan words to come into the field.
However, with android devices, you are still unable to do this within the GoCanvas app. Still, on some android devices, you are able to scan words into text on the camera app and then you can copy and paste those words into the field in GoCanvas. I know this isn't the ideal state, but I wanted to provide an update and work around options!

Microsoft Power Apps has this ability... :-)

Agreed! It would be really helpful for our organization and many organizations to have OCR abilities within GoCanvas.

This would be a real game changer. Something simple like odometer readings on daily vehicle inspection.
André Pepin - That is a great use case for OCR. Something we could defiantly use at our company as well!

another upvote for OCR on the app, even on the server side vs mobile
