GoCanvas provides feature that allows a user to edit their profile on these forums.
Edit is able to be saved but then after a short period reverts back to what it was prior to the edit presumably being over ridden by account information.
Does not make much sense to have an edit feature that allows a user to edit and save, become active on the forumn and then system over rides again.
Having now had unsolicited contact outside of these forums from a vendor offering an alternate to GoCanvas that addressed a specific issue I had raised here I had tried to remove my surname to prevent recurrence.
With the edit profile function not working properly the only work around appears to be altering the name at an account level which then flows on across all account functions.....

After a year of saying they weren't going to work on their community platform, Zendesk actually ended up doing a major push, including releasing this feature. You can now have an alias, which will replace the name that's coming over from GoCanvas.
Click on your name in the upper right and select My Profile:
Click on Edit:
And enter your Alias and save:
Hey Dave,
I'm sorry that happened. You've nailed the issue exactly - you can edit your profile on our Community platform, but then when it syncs with GoCanvas, your info gets overwritten. I'm looking into our options here and will try to figure out a solution ASAP. Thanks for letting me know!
My preference would be for this forum to require login and not just be open to the entire earth. It seems like the people for whom this community support site would be useful ought to all have credentials? Just my 2 cents.
A couple of quick updates here:
I've made it so people can't update their names here, since, as Dave pointed out, it'll just get over-written by the GoCanvas information.
I've also made it so user profiles are private, that is, you can see yours and yours alone.
Unfortunately, there's not currently a way to replace people's full names with just their first name, nor is there a way to choose a different username (this is apparently high on Zendesk's list of Community features, so might be an option down the line). I'm following this request in their Community (very meta) and will update if they say anything about it.
As for locking down the Community on a larger scale, I'm really hesitant to do that. You already have to log in to vote, comment, or post, but I think letting potential users (and even former users) see what's being talked about here is, I think, beneficial.
There's one more thing I want to try to see if we can truncate names after a space (not a perfect formula, but better than nothing). That wouldn't be an immediate thing, but I want to see if it's even possible at this point.
Essentially this comes down to a decision for GoCanvas to make around how it values it contributors privacy.
A user should be able to contribute here without also having to deal with unsolicited contact from your competitors offering solutions to GoCanvas issues.
Aside the privacy of your contributors it makes sense commercially for GoCanvas to not want this platform to be a lead generator for their competitors.
I will escalate this to a ticket. It is not acceptable to me that I need to modify my name across our GoCanvas license because of the privacy short comings of this system.
