Preferred Page Break Locations

Submitting on behalf of Sean Labbe

In the PDF designer, if I don't use manual page breaks, the page breaks will often occur in inconvenient places. If I use lots of manual page breaks, often there will be lots of wasted space when the amount of content entered on the form is low. I would like the option to enter "preferred page break locations". Under this scheme, if page breaks are not necessary due to low volume of content, they wouldn't be used. But when a page break is needed due to the volume of content, the nearest "preferred page break location" would be used rather than cutting off content in an awkward spot.

  • Hi Frosina,

What would you think the criteria would be to determine when a page break is necessary? For example, would it be when there are 'x' amount of rows in loop? Or a certain number of fields on a page? I'm curious about how the ideal page break would be "triggered", so to speak.

    Thanks!

The page break would be necessary any time the document is long enough to cause an automatic page break. Then, instead of simply forcing an automatic page break at whichever row causes the first page to run out of space, it would break at the nearest "preferred breakpoint" if one exists.

  • It would be cool if you could create groups of objects and then have the system treat the group of objects as a single object when the PDF renders to keep it from having a page break in the middle of those objects.

  • I agree.  I'm new to GoCanvas and this was the first thing I didn't like.  Table labels, for example, will also break across a page which is a bad look and makes the PDF data a little confusing to read for a customer.  I also had this happen with a signature line.  Somehow it split across two pages.  I feel the best fix would be to give us the option to download a word processor document type instead of only having a PDF option.  These visual issues could easily be fixed before emailing a document.
