Mirror Fields & Reference Data

I don't understand exactly what you are asking. Mirror fields only mirror other types of fields that you've already placed into the app. So the mirror fields themselves don't have anything to do with reference data.

Would you please provide more elaboration?

In my work order app, I have a short text field that prompts to enter a unit number. The unit number than uses reference data sheet #1 to popuate the unit's make, model and serial number. Since reference sheet #1 is already used for the unit number field, I can't use reference data sheet #2 to populate different information. I tried to use the mirror field to mirror the same unit number, but the option of reference data is not available on that field. I also don't want to make my mechanics enter the unit number again so that reference data sheet #2 can populate the other information that I would like within the app.

hmmm.. trying to wrap my head around this.

It sounds like you can do what you need using other short text or drop down fields with conditional branching. Copy the original field and make the copied field only show on the condition of the first. E.g. Your original short text field is model = "xyz". Add another short text field that only shows when "XYZ" is inputted. It is a redundant field which is useless to the user, so you hide it from them by unchecking "show on mobile". You could link another reference table to this field, if necessary.

You can then add conditional (not hidden) mirror fields that show the data in the hidden field elsewhere in your app.

Sorry if I'm not understanding this correctly and this doesn't help.

    Hi Cynthia,

I'm trying to understand, too, so bear with me.

You enter a number in the short text field, and then there are subsequent fields that populate automatically based on that number. Then it sounds like there are other fields that need to populate based on that same number, but from a different sheet. Is that accurate?

In that case, what I think you're trying to do is chain two reference data files together, like this: https://help.gocanvas.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360007960214-How-to-add-reference-data-for-more-than-15-columns

Does that achieve what you're trying to do?

    Hi Keith and Sara,

I don't think either of those suggestions would work. Keith, there are about 1,000 different unit numbers so if I understand your suggestion correctly, I'd have to have multiple of those fields hidden to match each unit number. Sara, unfortunately my two spreadsheets can't be mixed like that. They both have completely different sets of information and get updated at different times as well. The only way I can think this would work is if the mirror field allowed for reference data.

I think I understand what you are trying to accomplish as I am re-reading it. You need a new short text or drop down to appear later in the app and have the same value entered in it as the previous field. Yes, kind of like mirror, but more like a clone field.

Without adding a thousand conditional branches, best suggestion I can think of, you could place an informational mirror field then ask the user to re-enter the unit number based on the information provided in the mirror. You said in the first post, you didn't want to have to make them re-enter the information but I think you are going to have to.

Only other suggestion, possibly, using Zapier, you could have a Zap that sends a new dispatch based on the Unit value entered in the first submission.

Are you Cynthia from Florida that was a Transform 2018?

Yes that's right, it's not too big of a deal I think I'll just live without it. Unless, if they use either a recall or remember field would it populate in another field if the field has the same name?

    No I'm not, I'm from Canada =)

Sara, this should probably go to the feature request. Ability to add a conditional branch(es) that returns the same value as a previously entered field. a "Clone or copied field". Would work just like a mirror field except it could have reference data and other conditional branches associated with it. It would not be editable and It would have to have a different 'export label' for dispatching.

I can think of a lot of uses for this, especially with hand-offs. I would probably use this a lot if it were an option.

    Cynthia,

I had a similar issue and I did a little work on this.. Sara provided some clarification about the thread and it worked for me.
