Update our key field without updating the app?

Answered

Is there a way to update a key field without having to publish a different version of the app? I just want to add some names to the list of people.

  • Hey Mitchell,

This is an instance where you would instead, want to utilize "Reference Data".

Things that require publishing a new version include anything that requires that you enter the app builder. For example, if you have a field you want to add or delete or rename in the app, you'd have to go into the builder. the same goes for changing a field type, or altering the settings of a field. If you are using a dropdown or multi choice field and you have manually entered each value such as choices A, B, C, and D then to add a new choice or to remove a choice, you'd still have to enter the app builder.

That being said, if you have a dropdown field with a list of choices, such as a field with a list of employee or customer names, or a list of parts you sell that is constantly changing, or anything along those lines, you would instead want to utilize reference data. Basically you upload an excel file that has this complete list of entries to the GoCanvas website. you go into the app builder initially and link that column in your excel file to the field in question. This initially does require a new version of the app to be published. After this however, as you make changes to the excel file, you go to the reference data page on the website and upload a new file whenever there are changes to the file itself. This means you aren't going into the app builder, meaning any changes you make are instantaneous and don't require a new version. The users get a push notification telling them to sync to download new reference data, but that's it. The best part is, you can share one reference data file with multiple apps. That way, you upload the data once, and all apps automatically get the update.

You can learn more about reference data by clicking here. (Or just go to "help" and click the "reference data" category)
