Static image field in an app

Completed

Ability to place a static image field inside a Canvas app using the App Builder. An Admin or Designer would upload the image on the Canvas website and then associate it with a new field in the App Builder called a "Static Image" field. The mobile user would be able to view the image on the screen where the field was placed. Currently you can upload Reference Images that can be drawn on. You reference the images using the Drawing field.

    Hi all!

So excited to report that static image is now LIVE! Take a look in the App Builder for the new Static Image field, and read about how to use it here.

This has been a long time coming, and the votes and comments here definitely helped make this happen.

Take a look and let us know what you think!

  • This is WAY long overdue.  Unfortunately users don't always click on a button to display a picture that was uploaded since the field is labeled "Drawing".  Also, the need for a user to click anything is less than ideal.  A static image field is something I have wished for a long time.

  • Agree with Ryan too ...

  • Agreed!  A static image field that can be referenced in the app and then added to the pdf would be awesome.  I currently use the work around of loading images as a reference image.  I use one image  of a floor plan to draw on, and then I created a second image of the Key to that floor plan that has all the colors and such, but if I don't mark SOMETHING on the key as well then it will not show up in the reports.   A static image field would resolve all of that.

  • This feature should be a priority and I'm honestly amazed it does not exist. Optimally this media should be displayed as a small clip directly in the app with the option to tap for a full screen view. With that said, even a static image feature similar to the drawing without the prompt 'draw' would be better than what GoCanvas currently has. As Ryan pointed out, the 'Draw' field confuses users. This does not seem like a challenging addition as the functionality to view a reference image is clearly existent in the product through the draw field. Just change the prompt and take out the draw functionality. Maybe then add a feature which will not allow the user to continue without looking at the image.

  • I agree 100%

  • I also think this is necessary. Currently, you are limited to 10 reference images across the entire platform. It's very frustrating, especially if you're going to use an image for one app only.

  • Agreed. I'm trying to embed a facility layout into an app where the guys can quickview the location of items without having to navigate away from the form page. Any suggestions on how this might be accomplished?

  • Hi Alex,

There's no real way to do it without navigating away (you can use a link field that they could click on, but that takes you to your browser). You could do a drawing field with a reference image, but you're limited on the number of images you can have (and it's not super dynamic). That might work if it's the same facility layout each time though; if that's the case, take a look at his help topic: https://help.gocanvas.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002130768-How-to-set-a-background-image-for-a-Drawing-Field.

  • Agree. I am trying to insert a reference map into the app and the only way to do this is the drawing field...this is less than ideal!  This feature seems way overdue!!

  • I'm more so looking to pull an image from a data file to be displayed on a pdf to correlate with a part number.  On the pdf you would see a part number and a picture of the part.

  • I think I am in the same boat as David. I am looking to have images come up based on previous information. For instance, have an employees photo come up when they are chosen from a drop down list. Or have reference images come up at each point during an inspection.

  • Any updates on this feature? I see the OP posted this 9 months ago. I'm considering GoCanvas to roll out all of our on site documentation but the display of static images represents a crucial feature for our application.

  • Hi Tyler,

No updates, I'm afraid. This is definitely something we keep requesting internally as well. I have been getting some questions about it from the Product Team, so they're aware this is a need. I'll update if I hear anything!

  • It would be useful for training first time app users to with screenshots of the app.

  • Fact is static images can be as powerful or more powerful than static text in a app. If you want something done a particular way what better way to show than static images. The image needs to be there. Not something user needs to click on .

  • Another vote for static images. I have a form where I would like to generate a 5-star rating based on information provided on the form. I also tried using a reference image on a drawing field, but as was mentioned in an earlier comment, that doesn't show up on the pdf unless I put a mark on the drawing. I know I can use numbers but an image (3 stars, 5 stars, etc.) would be a nicer way to present the results.

  • Hi,

I'm trying to insert a risk assessment matrix into a form so that it can be used as the basis for deciding the risk level to be marked against  a range of construction activities. See the image example below which is yet again, highlighting the need for being able to insert a static colour image into a form.

  • Hi everyone,

Thank you for your continued support of this feature request -- I wanted to let you know that this feature is now a high priority on our roadmap, thanks to your feedback and insights! While I'm unable to share a timeline, I'll try to report back with important updates where I can.

    Thanks again!

  • Another vote for all of this. It would open up a whole new level of training and QC abilities.

  • Count me in for this feature. Using for staging vacation rentals and would like to have a reference of the room or item for the inspectors to see.

  • We really need this feature soon! Any idea when we'll see it rolled out?

  • Hi Danielle,

While I don't have any dates to share, I'm happy to say that it is actively being worked on -- exciting times!

I'll be sure to report back with any updates that I can share.

    All the best,
    Siobhan

  • I could really do with this feature allowing me to draw on the static image ? I have a permit to work system app which displays the site map, I want to be able to circle the area on the map the works are taking place without having to upload a ref image from the photo selection. Is this going to be available ? See example below.

  • Hi Steve,

Both our drawing field and static image field depend on Reference Images. What would be the best way for you to get that image into your Submission? Do you need to be able to upload it from your Gallery, for example?

  • How would one increase the number of reference images they can have on their account?

  • Howdy Robert,

Good question! You can submit a ticket to our Support team to inquire about increasing the maximum number of reference images that can be uploaded to your account.

  • Why aren't the static images showing up in the PDF reports?
