System Defaults in the Legacy Builder

One way to save users' time filling out forms is auto-populating repetitive information that otherwise slows them down.

System Defaults

The System Default field setting, available on Short Text Fields, allows you to dynamically pull in information based on account data collected by GoCanvas that is specific to the user who is logged in. For example, automatically populating a field with the First and Last name of the user filling out the form saves time on a repetitive task and is slightly faster than selecting an option from a drop down powered by reference data.

  1. Launch an existing form or start a new form in the Legacy Builder.
  2. Find or add the Short Text field you want to auto-populate with the user's data and select the field to open Field Settings in the left panel.
  3. Expand the More tab at the bottom of the palette and you'll find an option called System Default.

System Default defaults to None, that is, the text field will be empty when the user arrives at the screen. The other options that appear are all specific to the user who is currently logged into GoCanvas.

Username
The email address used to log into GoCanvas.
Company Name
The name of the company registered to GoCanvas, as defined in the Billing Info settings (under Billing Contact).
First Name
The user's first name as provided when creating their account.
Last Name
The user's last name as provided when creating their account.
Full Name (First Last)
The first and last names provided when creating the account.

GoCanvas Tip

You could make this field Read Only, too, if you don't want your user to be able to edit it. Since it is probably not necessary that this field ever gets edited, you may as well make it Read Only, or even turn off Mobile Visible, so your user skips over it quickly.
